Couples Front Yard Kitchen Garden Targeted

Im just taking a quick break from making banana muffins/bread to share this news article with everyone.

This couple has opted to have a beautiful *AND* functional garden on their front lawn (that they share with the neighbourhood) instead of having either dead grass like the rest of us or an over-fertilized, not-so-eco-friendly green carpet of grass. And they are being told to remove it.

Superpoints Network Outage - June 30 2012

Not able to get onto the Superpoints page to do your spins? You are not alone.

Here is the message posted on their Facebook page about 2 hours ago:
"As of late Friday evening, Superpoints has been experiencing technical difficulties. An electrical storm in Virginia has impacted most of our servers and our team is working hard to restore. We appreciate your patience!"

Usually they are pretty good for giving us a day with extra spins for outages like this (which has only happened maybe twice in the 5 months Ive been a member on their site.
If you aren't a member yet, consider joining once their page is back up again, you will probably get to take advantage of extra spins as well if that's what they give out :)
http://superpoints.com/refer/mfederer

In the meantime, if you are looking for another site to start making a little why don't you try Swagbucks?
Daily polls, offers, random codes on their Facebook/Twitter/Blog all add up to some great free extra money.
Ive collected $25 so far and almost have enough for another $15...all being saved for christmas :)

Frugal Living - Home Made Laundry Powder

Alright, it's been awhile since I found this idea online but I just finally got all 3 ingredients collected (not that they are hard to come by, I've just been busy and finally got around to it).

First, let us start off by comparing some prices of laundry soap shall we? I'm going to grab prices from Walmart.ca right now as I write this so you can look them up yourself if you want :)
  • Tide Free & Gentle Liquid - 64 loads = $15.95 => 0.24 per load
  • Gain Powder - 63 loads = $10.97 => 0.17 per load
  • Home Made - 60 loads = $2.25 => 0.03 per load
Now just so you know how I got my price here is the recipe including prices I paid for ingredients:

1 bar of Soap (Fels Naptha, Ivory, Zote, something you made at home, etc)
I paid $1.29 for my bar of Fels Naptha at Wegmans, it was even cheaper at Walmart.
1 cup of Washing Soda (Arm & Hammer is what I bought, don't know other brands)
I paid $3.49 for the box, there is about 9 cups in 1 box. 1 cup = $0.38
1 cup of Borax (20 Mule Team seems to be the go-to brand for this)
I paid $3.79 for the box, there is around 6 cups in 1 box. 1 cup = $0.63

And thats how I came to the price of a batch of the home made detergent.
Making it cannot possibly be any easier either....

Ready to mix up some savings

Use a hand held grater to get that bar of soap into as close-to-powder as a bar of soap will get. I also gave the soap a quick pulse through an old food processor of mine just to make sure it was relatively close to uniform in size/consistency. Mix in 1 cup of Borax and 1 cup of the washing soda.

A little lumpy, my borax needing a little TLC
Stir, stir, and stir some more. About 5 minutes.

In its container ready for storage
Voila.
That's it, that's all. This amount is good for about 60 loads since you use only 1 tablespoon per load. If your laundry is *really* dirty, use 2. So even if you end up using 2 scoops every time that means it's still only $0.06 a load! And yes it is HE friendly. The big hype about all these fancy HE washing detergents is a bunch of nonsense, the only thing differant between their soap and top-loading machine soap is HE machines require soaps that make less suds. Since more bubbles does not equal more clean, and this home made is convieniently *very* low-suds it works out perfectly :)

Now....I have laundry to go do.

Top 5 Hotels In Niagara Falls

I know I haven't posted here in a long time. When it hasn't been too hot out I have been outside working on the house or playing with the baby, and when it has been too hot we have been laying about the living room in the hopes of not melting into puddles on the floor. I promise soon I'll be back to baking and Warcraft (I even started playing Diablo - I suck at it) and trying out a couple other frugal household things I've come across.

In the mean time, why don't you check out this little article written by HotelProps.com
Those of you traveling into the Niagara area might find it handy when picking a hotel since there are a *slew* of them in this city.

LikeNet.ca - Getting Paid To Like Stuff! 250 point bonus!

Now let me start by saying this is not some get-rich-quick kind of mess.
LikeNet was mentioned here awhile ago as a little business based out of British Columbia, Canada and what they are in the business of doing is getting your company/page/etc some traffic. They have a few ways of doing that via Facebook likes, Twitter mentions, +1's on Google and that sort of thing, and those of us they send these opportunities to have the ability to make money by doing so. Even if that day there is no opportunities for you to take advantage of they always seems to have bonus codes to find on sites or in their emails, raffles and 50/50 draws going on right on their own website.

To-date just by giving a few likes, keeping up on their codes and doing my daily lucky button press I am up to 2253 points (1 point = $0.01) and the automatically cash you out at $35.
And in 3 hours time, if they can get to 9000 members (they were at about 8200 yesterday) they will give every account a 250 point credit, with the chance of referring the 9000th member and getting 9000 points! That's right.... $90.00!!!

Its just so easy I can't see why you wouldn't sign up now.

Superpoints Surprise Changes May 2012

I just caught wind of these changes to their site/rewards....and it appears to be spreading like wild fire. Alot of unhappy people, myself included, maybe its time to explore other websites.
In a nutshell....rewards now cost more points, like 100+ more points each. And they have capped points earned from referrals. For people always getting new referrals, this means pretty much nothing, but for the little users like myself...It is now creeping closer to being a waste of my time.

Go read their blog for yourself - let me know what you think?

Now I already use Swagbucks (which requires less points for cashouts and such and I enjoy, its dead easy)
What other sites do people use that are actually worth the time to do and worth mentioning on blogs/facebook/twitter?

Oh, and Canadians looking to transition off Superpoints and onto something just as easy and more rewarding?
Try Likenet, its another one that has the ability to earn you money without having a zillion referrals - I only have 2!

Home Made Arrowroot Cookies Recipe

Today's adventure into baking was another easy recipe that I found on the internet. Why the search? After 15 months Peanuts (the baby) has finally sorted out just taking bites of things instead of trying to jam the entire piece of food/object into his mouth. I had purchased Mum Mums before, but I figured if *I* didn't like the taste of it, why should I feed it to baby? Then I remembered Arrowroot Biscuits, I've had them here and there over the years and I don't remember them tasting bad....but then I saw their ingredient list.

Want to see it? Here's Gerbers Arrowroot Cookie ingredient list:
ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMIN MONONITRATE, RIBOFLAVIN, FOLIC ACID), SUGAR, ULTRA LOW LINOLENIC SOYBEAN OIL AND/OR HIGH OLEIC CANOLA OIL AND/OR HIGH OLEIC SUNFLOWER OIL, CALCIUM CARBONATE, ARROWROOT FLOUR, WHEY (FROM MILK), HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, SALT, AMMONIUM BICARBONATE, NATURAL BUTTER FLAVOR, SODIUM BICARBONATE, VANILLA EXTRACT, FERRIC ORTHOPHOSPHATE (IRON), SODIUM ACID PYROPHOSPHATE, SOY LECITHIN, MIXED TOCOPHEROLS (FOR FRESHNESS), ALPHA TOCOPHERYL ACETATE (VITAMIN E), ZINC OXIDE, CALCIUM PHOSPHATE

I highlighted the arrowroot for you...since it's lost in a sea of all kinds of other crap. Don't believe me? Have a peek for yourself.

Now here is the home made versions recipe:

  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup arrowroot flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Cream butter or margarine and sugar. Beat in egg and vanilla.
Stir remaining ingredients together and add. Mix well.
Roll 1/8 inch thick on floured surface. Cut into any shape you want. Prick with fork. Grease baking sheet. Bake in 350 degree F (175 degrees C) oven until golden, about 8 to 10 minutes.

The only change I made to this recipe was a little less sugar and a little water sprinkled in since it seemed to be a very dry recipe.

And voila -
Arrowroot Bats!
Willing to share his Bat Biscuit

Get Paid To Like Stuff!!

There is a new survey/pay to click site in town called Likenet.ca

You can earn money for referrals as well and though their referral rate has been fluctuating recently, they have confirmed they will be offering $0.25 per referral and an extra $1 if they live in Victoria or Vancouver.  They update the site daily with new "opportunities". These seem to be short surveys, Twitter follows, Facebook Likes, +1's on Google, etc. These opportunities don't take long at all! Please note if you Like a company you cannot "Unlike" them before you get paid as you will not get credit for the payment.  You can however hide their posts from your Newsfeed if you want.

They appear to be making changes and upgrades as they go along, and update on Facebook and Twitter when they have new opportunities available. Something to be aware of: They request all kinds of permissions on your Facebook page (like many contests/giveaways).  You can X out any permissions you don't want them to have access to and still sign up.   I personally don't share anything on my Facebook that I would care if a stranger saw, but you might want to consider using a "Contests/Freebies/Giveaways" Facebook page if you're worried. I just use my own personal one and haven't seen them post anything on my Facebook without permission.

I am really liking this new company. Since they're newer and smaller they're very open to feedback and suggestions!

Of course if anyone would like to join, my referral link is here:

Home Made Cinnamon Raisin Bread

I've been slacking on getting this recipe up, so now that we are on our 2nd loaf of this stuff in 3 days, its safe to assume its a decent recipe and can be shared :)

Again for this bread I used my bread maker to mix, but took it out before the last rise, I did that in a breadpan and baked in the oven. I also soaked the raisins for about 5 minutes in some hot water to soften them up prior to going in the mix.

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
  • 2 cups White Flour
  • 1 cup Whole Wheat Flour
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast
  • 1 cup Raisins
  • You can make a couple adjustments to this recipe. It originally called for just 3 cups of white flour but I split that up a bit, you can choose white or brown sugar for it (I used brown) and I just eyeball the salt - which means I probably only put 1/2 of a teaspoon of it in.

Either do the whole cycle in your breadmaker or take out after the second mix and let rise in a breadpan for 30 minutes. Cook in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes.

As you can see from the photo, its smaller than the whole wheat loaf of bread even though it has the same amount of flour/yeast. Also, you dont get the whole raisins like in store bought unless you hand mix this stuff, the bread machine kind of beats them into tiny bits. Tastes the same though.

Frugal Living - Home Made Pore Strips

At least once I day on the internet I come across a DIY/Frugal/Healthy way to do something, be it to take care of the house or take care of ourselves. And every now and then I've decided I'm actually going to try one of these things.
Today is home made pore strips. I don't know how many of you have tried or use on a regular basis such strips as Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips or maybe a store brand like CVS' but making your own at home cannot be any easier than this recipe:

    1 Tablespoon unflavoured Gelatine
1 Tablespoon of milk (any % of milk fat)
    1 Plastic Cup

Mix the milk and the gelatin in the cup, it should turn out to be pretty chunky looking and kind of grainy still.
Put in the microwave for 10 seconds (I did 15 because my microwave isn't that fantastic)
And what you get is a clear/yellowish thick liquid that you can spread on the parts of your face that you would normally put your pore strips. For this you can use an old makeup brush you don't use anymore, a popsicle stick or if you are me and have neither, I just spread it on using the back of my spoon I used to mix the stuff just put a thin layer!
Then you just wait 10-15 minutes, a good indicator is if your face feels like its going to crack when you talk, its dry :)
Peel off and view what kind of gross junk it pulls out of your pores.

The nice thing about these is it has way less chemicals in it. Here is the ingrediant list for the Biore strips:
Polyquaternium-37, Silica, Aqua, Glycerin, Polysilicone-13, Peg-12 Dimethicone, Hamamelis Virginiana, Titanium Dioxide, Stearyl lycyrrhetinate, Butylene Glycol, Methylparaben.

World Of Warcraft: Mists Of Pandaria

Well it sure looks like it is going to be a quiet kind of Panda day in the Beta.
I started myself a wee Panda shaman so I could go through their starting area again but it seems a whole lot of quest stuff is completely bugged out today. As in, I am stuck at level 2 and on this island until it is fixed. I don't mind being on the island, that's why I started another character - so I could grab more screenshots and such but until I can complete The Lesson Of The Burning Scroll I will not be able to progress any further along the quest chain. And from what I am seeing in the Blizzard forums, this scroll has been an issue for people most of the weekend.
I guess in the meantime Ill character copy an 85 over and see what that's all about.
